Jinja

Shenyang overcame the adverse impact brought by the spread of the international epidemic and made innovations in the "cloud foreign affairs" exchange mode. On October 26, 2020, Shenyang successfully established a sister city relationship with Jinja, Uganda, opening up a new method and new path of sister city work in the special period. Braga became the 22nd sister city of Shenyang.

Entering Jinja City

1. Basic information of the city

Jinja is the second largest city in Uganda and an important industrial city in Uganda, with an area of 734 square kilometers and a resident population of about 600,000.

2. Location

Jinja is located on the east bank of the Nile River, north of the equator, at an altitude of 1,125 meters, about 80 kilometers east of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, and on the south side of Victoria Nyanza.

3. Climate

Jinja City has a tropical savanna climate with an average annual temperature of about 22.3℃. The climate is mild and rainfall is abundant.

4. Economy

Agricultural farming is the main economic income in Jinja, with local production such as soybeans, peanuts, sorghum, millet, cassava, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, onions, and cabbage.

Jinja has a well-developed fishing industry due to its location on Victoria Nyanza and its origin in the Nile River. The animal husbandry is dominated by raising cattle and sheep.

Jinja is also an important industrial city. Industries include coffee processing, corn milling, sugar and beverages, leather, electronics, paper, matches, tires, and agricultural tools.

5. Friendly interaction

In November 2016, Uganda's Minister of Presidential Affairs Mbayo led a delegation to visit Shenyang, and leaders of Shenyang met with the delegation, and the two sides exchanged views extensively on developing friendly relations between local governments of Shenyang and Uganda and promoting practical cooperation, and reached a preliminary agreement.

In May 2018, Anthony Mula, Commissioner for Economic Affairs in the Office of the Vice President of Uganda, and his three-member delegation visited our city and reached a consensus on the establishment of sister city relations between Shenyang and Jinja, and the establishment of inter-university cooperation between our universities and Ugandan universities. The delegation also visited Shenyang Medical College and had an in-depth discussion on establishing inter-university relations and training cooperation.

In July 2018, a delegation from Shenyang University of Chemical Technology visited Uganda and signed a letter of intent with Busoga Region to develop exchanges and cooperation in the field of education and scientific research.

In September 2018, during the 18th World Winter Cities Association for Mayors Conference, Mayor Jiang Youwei signed a letter of intent to establish sister city relations with Kisambira Titus Mutanda, Mayor of Jinja in the presence of important guests from the world cities.

In September 2018, Shenyang Medical College signed an academic exchange agreement with Jinja School of Nursing and Midwifery.

In November 2019, Kisambira Titus Mutanda, Mayor of Jinja, Uganda, led a delegation to visit Shenyang to exchange views on deepening the sister city relationship between the two cities.

In April 2020, Shenyang introduced Shenyang's epidemic prevention work to Jinja City and shared Shenyang's experience in fighting the epidemic.

In October 2020, the two cities signed an agreement on the establishment of sister city relations. Jinja held a sister city signing ceremony, and leaders of Shenyang participated in the signing ceremony and delivered speeches on line.
